Grounding Sweet Potato Smoothie with Nature's Way

Since learning the basics of Ayurveda, I have been fascinated by seasonal changes and the effect these transitions have on our bodies. As we shift from summer to a chilly fall, we are entering Vata season, characterized by the air element this dosha is said to be dry, light, cool, rough, subtle, mobile and clear ( just like the qualities of air and ether).

When preparing for autumn it’s important to keep in mind this elemental change. Our bodies require more grounding foods, a slower yoga practice, and plenty of rest. It’s also beneficial to streamline your life a bit -  your calendar, home, closet, etc!

Some examples of grounding foods and spices to incorporate in vata season :

  • Squash (all types)

  • Sweet Potato

  • Beets

  • Dates

  • Avocados

  • Cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, ginger

Maybe it’s because the crisp air finally allows for cozy sweaters and hot tea, but fall makes me instantly drawn to my home and relaxation. Summer can feel hectic. It’s full of celebration and time outdoors and after 3 months of intensity and heat sometimes a low key fall season is exactly what we need to gear up for the holidays around the corner. My favorite product to use for relaxation is Nature’s Way Relax Powder.

I added it to this grounding sweet potato smoothie recipe.  Enjoy it in the morning for breakfast and add a touch of plant based protein, or as an evening dessert topped with granola. Grounding Sweet Potato Smoothie

Ingredients:

3/4 cup unsweetened almond milk

1/4 cup organic rolled oats

1 medjool date

1/2 cup cooked sweet potato (best to pre steam 1-2 for the week!)

1/2 tablespoon maple syrup

1/2 tablespoon cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon ground ginger

1/4 teaspoon turmeric

1 teaspoon Nature’s Way Relax Powder

2-3 ice cubes

optional proteins: plant based vanilla protein, chia seeds, hemp seeds

Directions: Using a high speed blender, add all ingredients and blend until smooth.
